When Benton Harbor High School lost to Buchanan 39-36 in the district semifinals, the high school basketball playoff game in Michigan descended into a full-on spectacle. Everyone is talking about what happened after the final whistle, even if the game itself was intense. Videos of the post-game incident that have surfaced are rekindling discussions about discipline and sportsmanship in high school athletics.
A basketball thrown from the Benton Harbor bench area strikes an unnamed official in one of the most startling scenes in the video. He staggered and reached for assistance at the scorer’s table due to the force of the impact. However, it didn’t end there.
An assistant coach took a piece of trash and threw it at the referee, escalating the already tense situation and leaving the gym in stunned silence.
This has to be some of the most pathetic HS basketball behavior I’ve ever seen in my Internet career.

Law enforcement swiftly led the referee out of the gym, who was clearly upset and leaning on one of the officers for comfort. Police records state that the confrontation started because of frustrations over the number of fouls, with Buchanan receiving eight and Benton Harbor receiving 22. The referee, an assistant coach, a player, and even two adult spectators got into heated arguments as a result of this discrepancy.
Dr. Kelvin Butts, the superintendent of Benton Harbor, responded by confirming that the assistant coach who got into the argument had been sacked.
