Owner Robert Kraft talked about the decision to fire Mayo after just one season in a statement that was shared on the Patriots’ official social media platforms.

At first, Kraft said, he had faith in Mayo’s ability to lead. But after assessing the team’s overall performance, he came to the conclusion that the franchise’s trajectory had not improved as he had hoped.

Analysts and former colleagues have responded strongly to the news of Mayo’s departure. Former Patriots standout and four-time Super Bowl champion Rob Gronkowski was especially outspoken about the ruling.

Gronkowski, who played with Mayo, expressed his opinions during Fox Sports’ halftime broadcast after being taken aback by the announcement.

Gronkowski stated: “I was shocked by that,”. “I think it was unfair to coach Jerod Mayo. I mean, he never had the chance to develop as a head coach. He was just a rookie himself in that department. And if you judge a coach by their first year, that’s really not appropriate.”
