Following a shooting on the Tallahassee campus Thursday that left two people dead and at least six others injured, Florida State University canceled all of its home sporting activities through Sunday, according to media sources.
According to accounts, the gunman was shot and is currently in the hospital. Tallahassee police identified the shooter as Phoenix Ikner, a 20-year-old who they believe is a student at Florida State.
Around noon ET, according to Florida State, police were called to an active shooter situation in the student union area.
Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare reports that six persons are in fair condition.
Richard McCullough, president of Florida State, stated in a statement: “We experienced a tragic and senseless act of violence at the heart of our campus,”. “There will be more updates in the days ahead, and more time to reflect and heal. But now, we mourn together. We lean on one another. And we remember who we are. We are Florida State. We are family. And we stand together.”
Through Friday, all FSU classrooms and major campus business operations are suspended.
Virginia was to host the Seminoles baseball team on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. The visiting Georgia Tech softball team’s games against FSU from Friday through Sunday were also postponed. This week also marked the cancellation of the football team’s final two spring practices.
At the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament in Cary, North Carolina, on Thursday night, the FSU men’s tennis team defeated Louisville 4-3.
