Will Howard, the quarterback for Ohio State, said the impending game against the Longhorns provides “extra motivation” for him after he failed to defeat Texas in his four years at Kansas State.
Howard said: “That was the only team I didn’t beat when I was in the Big 12,” “They’re always a good team. But none of those games were unwinnable. Definitely excited to get another chance at these guys.”
A trip to the national championship is at stake when Howard’s Buckeyes play Texas in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic on Friday.
Will Howard Praises Texas and seeks to end his drought
With a postseason QBR of 98.3, the highest of any playoff quarterback, Howard has excelled in his two appearances in the College Football Playoff. In the Rose Bowl quarterfinal, Ohio State defeated Oregon 41-21 after defeating Tennessee 42-17 in the first round. In those games, Howard led the Buckeyes with five touchdowns and 630 yards of passing.
Howard said: “Texas is a heck of a football team,” “So we’re going to have to be on our stuff.”
While at Kansas State, Howard had a 0–3 record versus Texas; he was not involved in the Wildcats’ 2022 defeat by the Longhorns.
With five touchdowns in the third quarter, Texas defeated the Wildcats 69-31 in 2020, led by now-Atlanta Falcons star running back Bijan Robinson. Howard and the Wildcats led at the half in 2021, but they were unable to maintain their lead after failing to score in the second half.
Howard stated: “That one still sticks with me,” “I don’t like how that one ended. … I know there’s a lot of people back in Kansas that are rooting for the Buckeyes to get this one done against these guys.”
The Longhorns won in overtime last year, 33-30, when Howard fell while attempting to throw a ball on fourth-and-goal from the Texas 4-yard line. Howard said that was the game that “still pisses” him off. The Longhorns advanced to the postseason after winning the Big 12.
