Bill Belichick Talks About Jerod Mayo’s Sacking

Only two head coaching terminations have been made public thus far: Doug Pederson, who finished this season with a losing record and 18 losses in his last 23 games despite having two 9-8 seasons with the Jaguars, and Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo, who was told prior to Sunday’s game that he would not be returning. The Patriots, who now own the fourth overall choice and the most salary cap room in the NFL, are left without a coach, and whoever takes over will need to make things better right away.

Bill Belichick talks about Jerod Mayo and the Patriots

Similar to the previous season, the Patriots ended with a 4-13 record, their poorest two straight seasons (8-26 combined) since 1992-1993 (7-25). It’s interesting to note that the franchise was acquired by current owner Robert Kraft in 1994, not long after that downturn.

The loss of the most successful quarterback-coach combination in NFL history, Bill Belichick and Tom Brady, is having an impact on the Patriots, who haven’t gone three straight seasons without making the playoffs since their seven-season skid from 1987 to 1993.

Belichick, a frequent guest on “The Pat McAfee Show,” was questioned about Mayo’s dismissal after just one year. He anticipated saying, “They didn’t call me and ask.”

Last month, Belichick, 72, agreed to the NCAA’s longest contract, a five-year deal with the University of North Carolina.

He had no intention of rejoining the Patriots or the NFL, especially after the team’s four-win season the previous year, which was his worst. The Patriots’ poorest record in the 18 seasons that Brady and Belichick were their head coaches was 9-7 in 2002, Brady’s second season as a starter.

Since the Patriots dominated the league and won six Super Bowls in nine appearances—basically making it to the big game every other year—many Patriots fans are celebrating this decline, even if you may be in unfamiliar territory.
