LeBron James Reveals What the NBA Should Learn From the NFL awards

On the most recent episode of Mind the Game, LeBron James, who is well-versed in trophy-winning, offered an intriguing suggestion for how the NBA should honor someone other than the MVP. It’s interesting that he borrowed the concept from the NFL. LeBron said:

“I did think about how the NFL does Offensive Player of the Year and MVP,” . “I thought that could possibly be something in our league … not saying we should do it, but it was something that was like pretty cool in the NFL how they do that. Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, MVP.”

“You know, is it the best player? Is it the player that had the best season with his team …  maybe that’s Offensive Player of the Year … or is it just simply the best player in the league, like statistically?”

It’s a little strange that an offensive player isn’t also honored because the NBA already awards a Defensive Player of the Year award, as LeBron’s cohost Steve Nash noted. He also brought up the excellent point that, similar to most leagues, the NBA MVP award criteria aren’t really clear.

Nowadays, a quarterback almost always wins MVP in the NFL. The league can honor a non-quarterback who had an outstanding season by awarding him or her with the Offensive Player of the Year award. For instance, Saquon Barkley ran for more than 2,000 yards last season and won Offensive Player of the Year.
