2024 may have brought with it the first EMMY and Academy Award wins of legendary screen star Angela Bassett‘s career, but – like many – she felt the recognition was long overdue.
Hot on the promo trail for her February 20-released limited series ‘Zero Day,’ Bassett was the star of this week’s ‘Sunday TODAY with Willie Geist’ (March 2) – a visit that saw her chat about everything from her storied rise to fame to late ‘Black Panther‘ co-star Chadwick Boseman and much more.
The topic of her career has been a hot take for the 66-year-old as of late, especially during an award season that sees so many reflect on her headline-grabbing loss for the history-making ‘Panther’ role in 2023.
In an recent interview with ‘Town and Country,’ Bassett – now an honorary Academy Award winner – reflected on not winning the Best Supporting Actress trophy in 2023.
“I found [the loss] interesting,” she said. “Interesting that I wouldn’t be allowed to be disappointed at an outcome where I thought I was deserving.”
At the time of the ceremony, Bassett was slammed by critics for exhibiting what some deemed unsportsmanlike conduct after losing to Jamie Lee Curtis.
Her second career defeat at the OSCARs (after being nominated for Best Actress in 1994), Angela suggested 2023’s loss hit differently because of her veteran status.
“I love applauding people,” she started before saying, “[But], I have put in: put in the time, put in good work over time. I didn’t think that was a gift. I thought it was a given.”
The sentiment echoes one the 66-year-old screen legend has expressed before – namely during a 2024 chat with Oprah Winfrey in which she referred to the upset as a “supreme disappointment.”
