Music lovers are still buzzing over the official 2024 GRAMMY nominations revealed Friday (November 10).
Beyond making headlines for being dominated by women like SZA, Taylor Swift, and Coco Jones overall, the biggest surprise undoubtedly came via the 7 nods given to Victoria Monet for work found aboard her latest album, ‘Jaguar II’ (and its breakout single ‘On My Mama’).
As if being the night’s second most-nominated act isn’t enough to boast, Monet may see her daughter – Hazel – make history for being the youngest performer to ever win one of the coveted golden gramophones.
Details inside.
As seen in the Instagram video above, Vicky and team couldn’t contain their elation as they heard the rising R&B diva’s name mentioned across categories like Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Best R&B Album, Best R&B Song, and more.
And while the nods serve as her first time being nominated as a performer, she’s earned Recording Academy recognition before when she was linked as a songwriter to GRAMMY-nominated works by ChloexHalle as well as Ariana Grande.
Taking to New York Times shortly after the award show announcement, the 34-year-old waxed honest about initially not having high hopes.
“Honestly, I didn’t expect anything, because I know that the Grammys is such a prestigious awards academy,” she started. “[My team and I] could’ve definitely fell on our asses, but we came out really, really happy and emotional. I’m still trying to wrap my head around it.”
Something else to “wrap her head around” is the idea her 2-year-old daughter is now the youngest GRAMMY nominee in history thanks to the ‘Jaguar II’ song ‘Hollywood’ (which also features the legendary Earth, Wind & Fire).
“She’s 2 and a half now, but at the time of the feature she was 4 months old,” Monet relayed. “Oh my God, I’m so proud. She just has no idea….I’ll have to explain this to her later. I know she’ll appreciate it because she does love music — she’s getting that bug, wanting to be onstage and sing. She’s making up songs and doesn’t even realize that she’s writing already. So I’m excited to share that with her when she’s able to understand a bit more. But, you know, humble flex for her at school.”
