The Streak Continues: After 52 Years & 13 Nominations, Diana Ross Loses Competitive GRAMMY at 2023 Ceremony

As far as legendary careers go, few can rival that of Diana Ross.

Beyond breaking down color and cultural barriers in the music industry during the height of her career in the 60’s and 70’s, the legendary diva has sold over 100 million records worldwide thanks to 25 studio albums and the countless hits from them.

Yet, even with six decades of reverence from fans, peers, and major tastemakers alike under her belt, Diana has never secured her industry’s top honor: a competitive GRAMMY.  This despite having collected 13 nominations over the last 50+ years.

And while that seemed poised to change at the award show’s 2023 ceremony, fans of ‘The Boss’ Miss Ross clocked before the show even began that she would go home empty-handed once again.

As we reported here, Ross was listed in the Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album category for her 2021 studio album, ‘Thank You.’

Challenged by the likes of Kelly Clarkson, Norah Jones, Pentatonix, and Michael Buble for the honor, the nod came as the 13th overall nomination of Diana’s career and first since 1982 hit ‘Muscles‘ was strong-armed out of the Best R&B Female Vocal Performance trophy in 1983.  This time she was defeated by Buble.

Diana technically won’t be leaving the ceremony completely empty-handed, however.

A previous Lifetime Achievement Award recipient (2012) for her solo work, this year Ross will accept the same award on behalf of The Supremes (of which she is the only surviving member of).
