Viola Davis Now an EGOT Winner After Victory at the 2023 GRAMMYs

As reported here, Davis squared off against Lin-Manuel Miranda, Questlove, Mel Brooks, and Jamie Foxx at the 2023 GRAMMYs for the Best Audio Book trophy Sunday night (February 5).

Collecting the win for the audio version of her 2022 memoir, ‘Finding Me,’ the actress not only captured her first GRAMMY but also the missing puzzle piece to EGOT status. “EGOT” refers to a person who has won all of the entertainment industry’s top honors: EMMYs, GRAMMYs, OSCARs, and TONYs.

Having previously won two TONYs for ‘King Hedley II’ and ‘Fences‘ (the play) in 2001 and 2010 respectively, a Primetime EMMY for ‘How to Get Away With Murder‘ in 2015, and an Academy Award (OSCAR) for ‘Fences‘ (the movie) in 2016, the addition of a GRAMMY makes Davis only the seventh Black performer to become an EGOT holder following Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, Quincy Jones, James Earl Jones, Whoopi Goldberg, and Harry Belafonte.

Among all acts, Viola is the 23rd person to collect all four major honors.
