Following the announcement that Rickey Henderson had passed away at the age of 65, Major League Baseball said goodbye to a legend on Saturday. After battling pneumonia, the two-time World Series champion—who is regarded by many as the greatest leadoff hitter of all time—died.

Henderson died in the Oakland area on Friday, according to TMZ. He had previously been undergoing treatment in a hospital for a brief length of time before passing away.

With 1,406 stolen bases, Henderson, a baseball legend, continues to hold the record. Rickey, a Chicago native, excelled as a football player in high school before entering the game.

After two seasons in which he ran for 1,000 yards, he was selected an All-American running back.

Rickey Henderson’s real calling was baseball

After his mother persuaded him that NFL players have shorter careers than other athletes, he decided to baseball despite receiving numerous scholarships for his skills on the football field.

He thus turned to baseball, and the Oakland Athletics selected him in the fourth round of the 1976 MLB Draft. He later played four different games for the team.

Throughout his 25-year career, Henderson played for nine different clubs, was named the 1990 American League MVP, and was selected to the All-Star team ten times. With 2,295 runs, he leads the MLB in scoring as well.

In 1989, he assisted Oakland in winning its first World Series in 25 years. Four years later, he added another with the Toronto Blue Jays. In addition, he played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, San Diego Padres, New York Yankees, New York Mets, Seattle Mariners, and Anaheim Angels.

Six years after retiring from baseball, Henderson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2009 for his spectacular play on the diamond. After learning of Henderson’s loss, there were many condolences, including from fellow Hall of Famer and former teammate Dave Winfield, who expressed his sadness.

He posted a picture of himself and Henderson together to Instagram with the following caption:
