Beyoncé‘s halftime show and Netflix’s NFL Christmas Gameday games contributed to the streaming service’s record-breaking viewership, the streamer announced Thursday.
Netflix announced in a press statement on Thursday that Wednesday’s Christmas Gameday was a “record-breaking day” for both the streaming service and the NFL, with Nielsen reporting a “unduplicated audience of nearly 65 million U.S. viewers.”
On Christmas Gameday, the Houston Texans played the Baltimore Ravens, and the Kansas City Chiefs played the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Ravens thrashed the Texans 31-2, and the Chiefs easily overcame the Steelers 29–10.
According to Netflix, each game had an average of more than 24 million viewers. They claimed Nielsen recorded an average minute audience (AMA) of 24.1 million for the Chiefs vs. Steelers game and 24.3 million for the Ravens vs. Texans game.
According to a press statement from Netflix, NFL executive vice president of media distribution, Hans Schroeder stated: “We’re thrilled with our first Christmas Gameday on Netflix with NFL games being streamed to a global audience,” “Fans in all 50 states and over 200 countries around the world watched some of the league’s brightest stars along with a dazzling performance by Beyoncé in a historic day for the NFL.”
The first of three yearly Christmas Gameday events on Netflix began with the matchups. The NFL and Netflix inked a three-year contract in May for $150 million to stream two games on Christmas Gameday each year.
Beyoncé’s Halftime Show Draws a Large Audience
Beyoncé’s halftime show, known as the Beyoncé Bowl, attracted 27 million people during the Raven-Texans game, the highest viewership of Netflix’s Christmas Gameday matches, which averaged over 24 million viewers each.
During Netflix’s NFL Christmas Gameday pre-game special, singer Mariah Carey also made an appearance. Bela Bajaria, Chief Content Officer at Netflix, stated: “Bringing our members this record-breaking day of two NFL games was the best Christmas gift we could have delivered,” “We’re thankful for our partnership with the NFL, all of our wonderful on-air talent, and let’s please not forget the electrifying Beyoncé and the brilliant Mariah Carey.”
Netflix also mentioned how popular #BeyonceBowl was on social media, as it quickly rose to the top of the global trending area on X once Beyoncé’s performance began.
According to Netflix, the streamer’s NFL Christmas Gameday performance will be highlighted globally on December 31 with the release of “global ratings and additional U.S. insights.”
