Like a man on a mission, Tyrese Haliburton kicked off Game 7 of the NBA Finals. He appeared intent on ruining Oklahoma City’s celebration on their own court as he made three three-pointers in just seven minutes. But catastrophe struck just as he was getting hot. Haliburton writhed in agony as he dropped to the ground.
He sobbed as he entered the tunnel, and the Pacers later disclosed that he had sustained a “lower leg injury.” What was meant to be the biggest game of the 25-year-old’s life ended prematurely when it became apparent that he would not be coming back. The Pacers persisted, though.
Brian Windhorst talks about the importance of Tyrese Haliburton
The basketball community was rocked by the incident, which was reportedly an Achilles tear. Brian Windhorst of ESPN acknowledged that he hasn’t been able to get over it. Speaking with emotion, he stated:
“I don’t know in 23 years if I’ve ever felt more personally affected by seeing something on the court.”
Windhorst noted that Haliburton had experienced both his greatest and worst moments in life. He acknowledged that he doesn’t know if the Pacers will return to the Finals.
“I’m not sure if the Pacers are going to get another shot at it. The Thunder are gonna get more shots…And not to do with that injury, it’s just a lot of things had to fall into place for them to make this run,”
It is a severe injury. Haliburton had been the spokesperson for the Pacers’ comeback. It’s unclear now if this Finals appearance marked the beginning of anything or a once-in-a-generation run.
