The First Team All-Pro quarterback did not win the NFL MVP Award for the third time in NFL history and the first time in more than two decades. The internet erupted in fury when it was revealed that Josh Allen will be accepting the trophy instead of Lamar Jackson.
Marcus Allen, an NFL Hall of Famer and six-time pro bowler, took a different tack in this argument while everyone else is taking sides. Considering how well both men played, Allen informed supporters: “You can’t really complain too much about Josh.”
“Both are deserving, they could’ve been Co-MVPs… They are both great to watch. I think the league is in good hands because of these players.”
Should Josh Allen have Lamar Jackson share MVP awards?
From a statistical perspective, the controversy makes perfect sense. Compared to Allen, Jackson threw 13 more touchdowns and 441 more passing yards.
In addition, Jackson outperformed Allen this season in the following areas: yards gained per throw attempt, passing success rate, completion percentage, touchdown percentage, and fourth-quarter comebacks.
Additionally, Jackson won their head-to-head encounter 35-10 in Week 4 of the 2024 regular season and threw two less interceptions than Allen. When it comes to stats, Allen’s selection as the 2024 NFL MVP has virtually little backing. QBR was the only important metric in which Allen outperformed Jackson. Jackson recorded a 77.2 QBR, but Allen’s 77.3 was the league’s best this season.
The idea of splitting an NFL MVP award has some historical precedent, to the former running back’s credit. Steve McNair and Peyton Manning received Co-MVPS in 2003.
