In an exclusive report by esteemed journalists Shams Charania and Tim MacMahon, sources close to Luka Doncic and the Dallas team informed ESPN that the player will be sidelined for at least a month due to a left calf injury sustained during Wednesday’s Christmas Day loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
According to those same sources, doctors concluded that the All-NBA Mavericks guard will be re-evaluated in a month, likely in early February, so he will miss at least 15 games. The guard also had an MRI and obtained other opinions regarding the ailment.
Doncic grimaced in agony as he fell on his left foot after lifting the ball, forcing him to quit the game late in the second quarter. He instantly turned to face the Mavs bench to signal that he was hurt and couldn’t return to the defensive position.
With 2:31 remaining in the first half, the Mavs called a timeout to let Doncic exit the game after the Timberwolves scored. After walking to the locker room for additional assessment, he was declared out minutes later and used crutches to exit the arena after the match.
Goodbye to MVP and All-NBA after 15 games for Luka Doncic
Doncic will miss at least 15 games and be disqualified from consideration for NBA awards, including MVP and All-NBA teams, if he is reevaluated within 30 days. He must have participated in at least 65 regular season games to be eligible for these accolades, and he has already missed eight this season because of a left heel contusion, a right wrist sprain, and a right knee contusion.
He will no longer reach 65 of 82, in addition to the minimum of 15 he will now miss. Doncic’s calf has previously sustained problems. A left calf contusion recently kept him out of training camp and the preseason.
Doncic has hurt his calf three times in the last few years. After suffering an injury during the regular season finale, he missed the first three games of the 2022 playoffs. He also missed the majority of the 2023 preseason after suffering an injury while training during the Mavs’ trip to Real Madrid.
Luka has averaged 28.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 7.8 assists per game in 2024–25 and has been chosen to the All-NBA first team for the last five years. Nevertheless, in the games Doncic has missed, Dallas is 6-2. After Irving scored 39 points in Wednesday’s defeat, in which Doncic had an injury, he added, “I pray that Luka recovers soon.”
