Victor Wembanyama and Chris Paul Disqualified for Violating the NBA Skills Challenge Rules

You don’t see this very often, but on Saturday night at the NBA All-Star Game, Chris Paul and Victor Wembanyama were eliminated from the skills competition.

The San Antonio Spurs teammates were taking part in the Team Relay, the opening round of the NBA Skills Challenge. In order to complete the relay as fast as possible, Paul and Wembanyama just threw their shots from the spot toward the baseline rather than attempting to hit them.

So what are the rules that got Victor Wembanyama and Chris Paul disqualified?

You can watch Paul and Wembanyama flop each of their “shot” attempts from the spot instead of making them. Instead of requiring players to remain at each shooting place until they converted, the rules were modified this season to permit three attempts from each spot.

Instead of having everyone wait for a player to make a shot after shot for thirty seconds or longer, this was done to keep the competition going. But it gave someone the opportunity to explore a novel approach to finishing the course as soon as possible. Wembanyama and Paul enter.

“This has Chris Paul’s fingerprints all over it,” the commentators said.

The jeers from the audience began to pour down as Paul and Wembanyama made their way through the course.
