Keri Hilson is back and hitting the promotional trail to signal her return.
And The Breakfast Club on Power 105.1 was her latest stop.
The singer-songwriter seized the moment to open up in earnest about her nearly 15-year hiatus, overcoming a deep “depression,” her single ‘Bae,‘ and forthcoming album ‘We Need to Talk’ (due April 18).
Hilson also got all sorts of candid about “that” ‘Turnin’ Me On’ remix that many received as a diss towards Beyonce.
The R&B star delivered a candid account of what transpired and revealed she was “forced” to record and release the record.
Full story below…
Speaking with Charlamagne Tha God, DJ Envy, and Loren LoRosa, Hilson said of the 2011 track:
“It’s a regret. But not in the way people think. That’s a song I actually didn’t write. Those are not my words.
That’s a song I actually didn’t write. Those are not my words. I was on tour, Polow [Da Don] wanted me to do a remix to Turning Me On. He produced the record. Because I was on tour with Lil Wayne, I wasn’t able to lay anything down. he had been on me for a couple of weeks, [saying] we need to do a remix.”
Continuing, she revealed:
“He had another writer in our camp at the time…he had her write this. He played it for me. Meanwhile I’m thinking I was coming in to write a remix to ‘Turnin’ Me On.’ Automatically, I was like, ‘I’m not saying that.’ That was my position. I’m an athlete. I am competitive. But I’m not nasty, I’m a finesse player. I don’t look at things like that.”
Unpacking how Polow is into “shock” antics, and she isn’t opting to proceed with writing her own verse, she carefully articulated that the situation was “forceful.” She stressed that the situation turned toxic by involving other artists and “threatening my career.”
Hilson claims that, because “my album wasn’t out yet, I was told it’s not coming out if you don’t do this.”
