For the two-way star, Travis Hunter‘s formal Jacksonville Jaguar status is more than just a career achievement—it’s the perfect setting for success.
Hunter secured his NFL future over the weekend by agreeing to a four-year rookie contract worth $46.65 million with a team that not only desired him but also knew how to employ him.
Teams disagreed on Hunter’s deployment strategy going into the draft. While some saw him as a wide receiver, others saw him as a full-time cornerback. The Cleveland Browns leaned toward his offensive explosiveness, while the Tennessee Titans preferred his defensive potential.
Although his team never had the chance to select Hunter, head coach John Harbaugh of the Baltimore Ravens even questioned whether a two-way role was possible in the modern NFL.
But Hunter never faltered. He flourished on both sides of the ball at Colorado and made it apparent that he planned to carry on doing so in the professional ranks. The Jaguars acquired him by trading up to the No. 2 overall pick because they shared that goal.
In addition to being given the opportunity to play both wide receiver and cornerback in Jacksonville, Hunter is also surrounded by a coaching staff that is eager to develop his special blend of skills. His response after putting pen to paper showed that support.
In an interview with Brian Sexton, a team reporter, Hunter stated: “It’s a blessing,”. “I’m very excited to be at a place that they let me go ahead and be myself, and let me do what I do.”
Hunter is currently taking part in drills on both sides of the ball during offseason workouts, even though the Jaguars intend to start him mostly on offense.
