Karmelo Anthony, the star high school basketball player, who is been accused of fatally stabbing Austin Metcalf, will miss out on the whole graduation ceremony. Yes, that’s exactly how things will turn out. Karmelo Anthony present to accept his diploma in person!
According to reports, Karmelo clocked 3.7 GPA but looking at the brouhaha concerning the fatal stabbing of Austin, it’s better he doesn’t attend in person to receive his Diploma. The good news is, he qualifies to graduate!
The 18-year-old, who was released from custody last month after posting a $250,000 bond, is charged with murder in connection with the fatal stabbing of Austin Metcalf.
Next Generation Action Network, a nonprofit advocating for Anthony’s right to a fair trial, said in a news release that, according to WFAA, he will receive his diploma without needing to attend school for the final month and a half of the academic year.
The nonprofit added that Frisco Independent School District allowed this because Anthony completed the necessary credits and has a 3.7 GPA. His family reached an agreement with the district, including the teenager not participating in “any senior graduation activities.”
“We are proud to share that Karmelo Anthony will graduate and receive his high school diploma, and that his academic achievements will not be disrupted,” Minister Dominique Alexander, NGAN president, said, per CBS News Texas and NBC 5 DFW. “This is a moment of dignity for Karmelo and a reminder of the power of advocacy done right.”
Karmelo of Centennial High School was released from jail on bond after lawyers reduced his bail from $1 million, but his freedom might be temporary.
More than $530,000 has been donated to the “Help Karmelo Anthony Official Fund” on the crowdfunding site GiveSendGo.com.
But hey, at least Karmelo Anthony has a legit reason not to be present to receive his certificate!
