At 35 and about to begin his 17th season, DeMar DeRozan continues to perform at an All-Star level. The dynamic guard has recorded 12 consecutive seasons of scoring 20 points or more per game, showcasing impressive durability. Even as one of the league’s more experienced players, DeRozan remains one of the most lethal and efficient scorers. Achieving such longevity in the NBA requires significant dedication.Very few professional athletes reach their 17th year, and those who do often aren’t making substantial contributions. However, that’s not true for DeRozan, who has been a reliable standout for the underperforming Sacramento Kings and Chicago Bulls in recent seasons.

Dwyane Wade, who felt the heavy mental and physical burden after 16 seasons, was curious about DeMar’s secret. By the time Wade ended his career in the 2018-19 season, he felt completely drained.

DeMar DeRozan explains his peak physical fitness

The Hall of Famer wanted insights on what DeRozan does off the court to maintain his health and mental acuity.

The six-time All-Star elaborated: “It’s a year-round thing,”“For me, that goes back to making sacrifices. I don’t go out. I don’t drink. I never had a drink in my life … I just always kind of looked at it from the standpoint of like, my whole goal of hooping was I wanna be able to play for as long as I can.”

DeRozan recognized early in his career the significance of body care, even on days he feels well. He continued:

“When I came into the league, I used to make fun of all the old heads, like, ‘Man, why you putting ice on?’ It’s like, ‘Well, I’m telling you, you better start putting ice on before you start to need it.’ I’m like, ‘All right, f*** it! I’m putting ice on, nothing hurting,’”

The Kings star emphasized that maintaining his well-being is an ongoing process. Prioritizing nutritious eating and ensuring adequate sleep is essential daily. So far, DeRozan’s routine has proven effective, as he has never experienced a long-term injury in his career. Despite his relative good health and success on the court, DeRozan remains committed to learning about his body and the game.
