In breaking news, the legendary singer, actor, and civil rights activist Harry Belafonte has died.

Reps for the trailblazing star confirmed that he died today (April 25) aged 96.

Belafonte passed at his home in Manhattan of congestive heart failure.

As a musician, the performer – who was born in New York to Jamaican parents – made calypso music in America in the 50s with classics such as the ‘Banana Boat Song’ (known to most as ‘Day-O’).

He parlayed said popularity into a career on the big screen too, starring in films such as ‘Carmen Jones’ and ‘Uptown Saturday Night’ alongside his friend Sidney Poitier.

Belafonte was also an ardent activist for social justice and marched alongside Martin Luther King Jr.
