In Super Bowl LIX, the Kansas City Chiefs’ chances of an unprecedented three-peat fell apart. One guy in particular, rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy, stood out despite the team’s struggles against the Philadelphia Eagles. With two touchdowns and a new Super Bowl record for receiving yards by a rookie, the former Texas Longhorn made history with an outstanding performance.
But Worthy’s on-field exploits weren’t the only thing that attracted notice. Tia Jones, his fiancée, posted a video of his amazing 24-yard touchdown catch on Instagram with the thought-provoking statement, “Only one who didn’t disappoint, he deserved it for real.”
Many people immediately began to speculate that the remark was a covert jab at Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs’ underperforming offense.
Patrick Mahomes and Xavier Worthy suffered because of Andy Reid
Even with Worthy’s outstanding effort, the Chiefs’ offensive approach was far from ideal. Andy Reid, the head coach, paid a heavy price for giving up on the running game. Only three runs were scored in the first half, and the squad only attempted 11 rushes out of 32 passes.
Reid’s playcalling may have been impacted by the Eagles’ pass defense, which was among the worst in the league. But in the first half, Mahomes made two costly interceptions as he battled under pressure. Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt, the Chiefs’ best running backs, combined for just 16 yards on the ground.
Worthy’s exploits late in the game offered some solace to the Chiefs as they watched their historic opportunity pass them by. His 157 receiving yards solidified his legacy in NFL history by surpassing the previous rookie Super Bowl record. The greater lesson for Kansas City, though, was their inability to adjust—a problem that might follow them into the upcoming campaign.
