Philadelphia, known for its passionate sports fanbase, was consumed with joy following the Eagles’ momentous victory. The entire city erupted in exuberant celebrations, taking to the streets to celebrate their team’s victory. However, this euphoric atmosphere was shattered when Tyler’s innocent enthusiasm took a tragic turn.
Sabapathy, a native of Toronto, Canada, sustained severe brain trauma from the fall and was placed on life support before succumbing to his injuries at Jefferson Hospital, according to a report by ABC 6 Philadelphia.
In a heartfelt statement, Temple President John Fry and Vice President for Student Affairs Jodi Bailey expressed their sorrow over the loss of the first-year student.
“It is with deep sadness that we write to share news of the death of first-year student Tyler Sabapathy. Over the weekend, Tyler sustained critical injuries and ultimately passed away this afternoon,” Bailey said.
“The loss of a promising 18-year-old man like Tyler is both tragic and traumatic. There are no words that can make sense of it, and the entire Temple community mourns his passing. Our hearts go out to Tyler’s family, friends, classmates, and all who knew and loved him.”
Sabapathy was a member of the university’s gymnastics team and was pursuing a major in exercise and sport science.
Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker had issued warnings prior to the celebrations, urging fans to avoid dangerous activities such as climbing poles or discharging firearms.
“You don’t want to be in a celebratory moment, you know, have a tragedy occur,” Parker said. “Please don’t climb the poles.”
