By acquiring Kevin Durant from the Phoenix Suns, the Houston Rockets have made a significant advancement, but league sources think they might not be done yet.
The Rockets’ front staff seems to be getting ready for the potential of an even greater splash, even though the deal for Durant is already changing the Western Conference.
In order to get Durant, Houston forfeited Dillon Brooks, Jalen Green, and the 10th overall pick in this year’s draft. But in order to maintain depth and flexibility, the squad kept hold of important players like freshman Reed Sheppard and Tari Eason.
Analysts are impressed by the Rockets’ ability to avoid completely overhauling their squad for a transaction of this size. NBA analyst Bill Simmons commended the decision on his podcast and said Houston is still able to pursue another star. Simmons stated:
“I just loved it for them. They didn’t give up Jabari Smith Jr. … That’s a miracle,”
“They kept their flexibility for one more trade if they want to do it. I don’t know whether that trade happens in the summer or in the December, January, February range.”
Giannis Antetokounmpo has long been mentioned as a potential addition, but if the Bucks have a rough season next year, the Rockets might be one of the few teams with the resources and drive to pull it off.
Simmons noted that Houston would be well-positioned to make a serious offer if Milwaukee falters and Giannis is dissatisfied.
