Defensive tackle Beau Atkinson and quarterback Ryan Browne of North Carolina are going through the transfer portal.
In his two seasons at UNC, Atkinson recorded 54 tackles and led the Tar Heels with 7.5 sacks the previous season. Browne is also departing because the Tar Heels are vying for South Alabama quarterback Gio Lopez.
According to ESPN’s Eli Lederman on Monday, Lopez, a redshirt freshman who passed for 2,559 yards and 25 touchdowns last fall, is the top target for UNC. After moving from Purdue, where he passed for 532 yards in the 2024 season, Browne landed at UNC in December.
Zach Rice, a former five-star prospect and offensive tackle for UNC, also went through the gateway. Over the previous three seasons, he participated in 20 games. Along with reserve linebacking brothers Cade Law and Crews Law, the portal also includes former three-star defensive back Zion Ferguson.
However, linebacker Mikai Gbayor, who recorded 49 tackles for Nebraska the previous season, was acquired by coach Bill Belichick and the Tar Heels on Wednesday. In December, Gbayor first moved to Missouri.
