Travis Kelce Fined for Christmas Day Celebration

On Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs will play their final game of the regular season, but it won’t be a big one—at least not for them. Although the team has already secured the top AFC seed, the Chiefs still hold the key to three different teams’ postseason prospects. They take against the Denver Broncos, who, if they defeat the Chiefs, would secure the last postseason berth. The Miami Dolphins or Cincinnati Bengals might potentially qualify if the Chiefs win.

The Bengals’ and Dolphins’ issue? The Chiefs will give their best players a break.

Chris Jones, Travis Kelce, Patrick Mahomes, and others will not play against the Broncos. The Chiefs’ veterans will now have two complete weeks to recuperate and prepare for the postseason. The NFL has chosen to ruin Kelce’s vacation time by fining him for an incident that occurred in Week 17.

Travis Kelce was fined for Tony Gonzalez’s celebration against the Steelers

Kelce got a touchdown throw from Mahomes in the fourth quarter of the Christmas Day game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. After that, the tight end dunked the ball through the goalposts to celebrate.

Tony Gonzalez, the iconic tight end and former Chief who popularized the celebration, was honored at the event. Although it was a kind gesture, Kelce’s action backfired.

The NFL’s rulebook now prohibits that kind of celebration, which led to a penalty flag at the time and a $14,069 fine that Kelce will now have to pay. Fans were obviously shocked that such a harmless celebration was prohibited, but the NFL is strict about strange things.

Since it’s not a huge sum of money, Kelce will most likely conclude that it was worthwhile.
