“They Be Calling Me Michael Jackson”: Sexyy Red Talks to Billboard About Her Hip-Hop Influence & Hates For People To Say All She Raps About Is C**chie

Fans and critics agree: Sexyy Red is easily one of the biggest music newcomers of 2023.

Love or hate her, the femcee’s raunchy brand of Rap helped her rise to the top of charts and headlines – even garnering attention from some of the genre’s leaders like Drake and Nicki Minaj.

Beyond preparing to deliver second child this year, a very pregnant Red (born Janae Nierah Wherry) took to Billboard’s digital magazine to talk about what else she plans to deliver musically in 2024, her cultural impact, and disdain for being pigeonholed into “p**sy rap.”

SEXYY RED ON HER INFLUENCE:

“They be calling me Michael Jackson…I guess because of the influence I be having on people,” she shared (as seen in the interview clip above) before later explaining how a slew of up-and-coming St. Louis female rappers are imitating her style.

SEXYY RED ON BEING DEEMED A “P**SY RAPPER”:

“I don’t agree with that because why is that the only thing you heard me talking about?” she relayed. “That’s the only thing that you got out of everything I just said? You just heard me say ‘coochie’? I hate when they say that. I just rap about my daily life. Girls that live like me, I just rap about what we go through. I don’t sit and talk about coochie all day.”

SEXYY RED ON HIDING HER PREGNANCY:

“Touring was stressful at first, because nobody knew I was pregnant. I’d be in the bedroom trying to suck my stomach in or wear clothes to show I wasn’t. It hurt to just be onstage all day holding your stomach. It’s hard to hide it,” she said. “Being pregnant is stressful; it wears your body down. I was tired, but I tried to hide it as much as you possibly could.”
