The Chiefs and Andy Reid Are Facing Criticism for Manipulating the NFL Playoffs

The Denver Broncos shocked the Kansas City Chiefs with a 0-38 shutout loss to end the regular season. During Andy Reid‘s 11 years as head coach, this was the first game without a score.

Reid’s choice to bench important players like Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes has caused a great deal of controversy, even though the Chiefs had already guaranteed the top seed in the AFC and a first-round playoff bye.

Given that the loss had a major impact on the league as a whole, Reid’s tactics caused many to wonder why he did it. The Chiefs’ offense struggled under backup quarterback Carson Wentz, managing only 98 total yards.

Bo Nix, the Broncos’ rookie quarterback, stole the show as he completed 26 of 29 passes for 321 yards and four touchdowns. In addition to guaranteeing the Broncos their first postseason appearance since 2015, the win also disqualified the Miami Dolphins and Cincinnati Bengals from postseason participation.

NFL fans expressed their indignation on social media, accusing the Chiefs of purposefully manipulating the playoff picture to prevent a possible clash with the Bengals. Robert Griffin III, a former quarterback, tweeted:  “Chiefs did everything they could to make sure the Bengals didn’t make the Playoffs. MY GAWD.”

Reid’s strategy was deemed cowardly by several supporters, and one post demanded that Reid be punished or dismissed, saying: “What we witnessed in this game is illegal in sports.”

The Chiefs and the Bengals have a recent history of fierce playoff matches, with the Chiefs losing in the 2021 season. Reid’s supporters supported the choice to rest starters in spite of the criticism, claiming the squad had nothing to gain from the match.

The Chiefs’ preparedness for the divisional round is a concern as the Broncos celebrate their return to the playoffs. Given that Mahomes and other studs haven’t played in almost a month, Kansas City’s biggest challenge might be rust rather than rest.
