Even though Stephen A. Smith inked a new five-year, $100 million contract with ESPN on Friday, he might still have other outside media deals in the works. In the lead-up to his most recent episode of The Varsity, John Ourand of Puck discussed that, stating that Smith’s contract with ESPN opens up chances for further non-sports work outside of his current YouTube show and podcast.
He also mentioned specific conversations with SiriusXM, a satellite radio provider. Although it has many interesting moments of its own, the main focus of this Ourand podcast episode, which was aired early on Sunday morning, is an interview with NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman.
John Ourand speaks about Stephen A. Smith’s show in SiriusXM
However, Ourand’s initial remarks regarding the Smith contract are noteworthy as well, particularly the SiriusXM detail.
After discussing how the new agreement allows Smith to continue hosting First Take while stepping away from NBA Countdown to make less frequent appearances on ESPN (and possibly more on the NFL side), Ourand goes on to discuss how it gives Smith more freedom for work outside of sports. And he states explicitly:
“I’ve been told that he’s been talking with SiriusXM about hosting a show on that satellite radio platform. There are still a lot of possibilities, and a lot more money out there, for Stephen A. Smith.”
Although Ourand doesn’t go into further depth, the fact that those conversations exist is noteworthy in and of itself. Many people have speculated about Smith’s future plans, including his planned “Three Americans” political tour with Chris Cuomo and Bill O’Reilly, as well as the possibility that he would run for president. Other businesses have also expressed interest in collaborating with Smith.
