While introducing at the AMAs, the ‘Bar Song (Tipsy)’ singer reeled off the list of the past winners of the Country categories. In the immediate moments that followed, Moroney added that the Carter Family practically “invented Country music.” This prompted the chart-topper to give her sharp side-eye and an awkward chuckle before finishing with naming this year’s nominees.

For many, the translation is that Shaboozey (born Collins Obinna Chibueze) was taken aback by the seeming whitewashing of the Country music genre and what Black Country artists contributed to it.

Just for some background, the Carter Family are indeed Country pioneers from the late 1920s-1940s whose style influenced Country music.

Yet, amidst the ongoing dialogue about the foundational impact of Black talent, Moroney’s words and Shaboozey’s response will no doubt spark further discourse.
