‘Real Housewives of Potomac’ star Karen Huger is once again pleading for grace as she faces sentencing for her DUI conviction.

Full story below…

After being convicted in 2024, Huger fired her original legal team and hired new attorneys, David A. Martella and Barry Helfand, to represent her.

In a newly filed motion, The Grand Dame’s reps pointed to her struggles as a factor that may have contributed to her actions.

Per the filing:

“Ms. Huger’s mother died on Thanksgiving morning in 2017 of kidney failure and sepsis. Her father passed away seven months later on June 28, 2018, from complications of Alzheimer’s and ‘of a broken heart.’ Those two losses, in quick succession, devastated Ms. Huger. In her opinion, they may have been the straws that broke her back, leading to several errors in judgment that led to her arrest.”

This DUI conviction is Huger’s third, yet she is still asking for leniency. She insists that a glass of champagne and the medication she took caused the most recent incident.

Huger admits that, in hindsight, the combination of alcohol and medication impaired her ability to accurately assess her coordination on March 19, 2024. Her lawyers explained:

“During the trial, she could not turn off the testimony or the body cameras. She could not get up and walk out of the room, nor look at her phone. The trial was a wake-up call that inspired Ms. Huger to take the dramatic step of entering a 28-day inpatient rehabilitation program at Beachside in West Palm Beach. The Court is probably very familiar with dual-diagnosis treatment programs. Ms. Huger refers to her time at Beachside as a triple-diagnosis program: dedicated to treating alcohol abuse, drug/medication abuse, and trauma.”

Prosecutors, however, have highlighted her prior offenses:

“She has two prior DUI/DWI convictions, plus a third one that was pled down to reckless driving,”

The courts recommended jail time for Karen:

“It is therefore the State’s recommendation that your honor sentence the Defendant to two years suspend all but 6 months of executed incarceration followed by a period of supervised probation.”

Huger will be sentenced for her 2024 DUI conviction on Wednesday, February 26 her future remains uncertain.
