After reportedly opening fire on Megan Thee Stallion two years ago on a California curbside, embattled Rap star Tory Lanez (born Daystar Peterson) has been found guilty for the shooting incident.
Details inside.
A week of jaw-dropping, and sometimes confusing, court testimonies from Stallion to reported eyewitnesses, people close to the parties involved in the incident, and more ended with a jury of five men and seven women returning a guilty verdict Friday (December 23) after a two-day deliberation.
Lanez, despite not taking the stand at his own trial, initially pleaded not guilty to felony assault with a firearm; concealing a loaded, unregistered gun in a vehicle; and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. Convicted on all three charges, he faces up to 22 years in prison and deportation to his native Canada for shooting the Rap diva’s feet.
Rocking headlines since commencing on December 12, response to the trial (inside and outside the courtroom) took a salacious turn as focus zoomed in on Stallion’s sexual history – something even the GRAMMY winner brought attention to herself.
“There is not a day that goes by where somebody is not calling me a liar or is not shaming me for being a grown woman and having sex. This whole story has not been about the shooting, it’s only been about who is Tory having sex with,” Megan said in the testimony projected on a screen and read aloud by the prosecutor.
Los Angeles District Attorney Kathy Ta echoed the sentiment in her closing argument against Lanez’s defense lawyer, George Mgdesyan.
“He said this case was about sexual relationships. That’s not true. This case has always been about the shooting,” Ta argued. “Why did the defense do this? He wants to play on age-old prejudices and biases. But you are all better than that.”
At the time of this report, Meg nor Tory has issued an official statement on the verdict.
What’s more, Lanez legal woes may not be done quite yet. He’s said to still be under investigation for allegedly assaulting R&B singer August Alsina in September. Click here to read more about that.
