The New York Jets will start their fourth signal-caller since 2020 in Week 1 of the 2025 season after signing quarterback Justin Fields in free agency. Fields, who joins New York following a few starts with the Pittsburgh Steelers last season, is not encouraged by the organization’s decades-long problems and the high quarterback (and personnel) turnover.
Fields recently talked about why he chose to sign with the Jets, his third NFL franchise since the Chicago Bears selected him in the 2021 NFL Draft.
In the NFC North, the Ohio State product regularly faced then-Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn throughout his three seasons in Chicago attempting to establish himself as a consistent starter.
Justin Fields gives a strange reason to join the Jets
Fields’ admission that the main reason he came to New York was to be coached by someone who had watched him play on the other team’s sideline for years may have surprised some.
When asked why he chose to join with the Jets, Fields responded: “I think, No. 1, Coach Glenn,”
“I’ve played against him early in my career. I know how passionate he is about the game, the way he coaches, the way his players play. So I think that was the biggest thing for me.”
“Our relationship playing against each other means a lot because Detroit, of course, they’ve had a lot of success the past couple of years,”. “So for [Glenn] to want me here is definitely an honor, and I’m going to put it all on the line for him and do all I can to help this team be successful.”
Fields was 10-28 with the Bears after being picked with the No. 11 pick. He completed 60% of his passes and had 40 touchdowns versus 30 interceptions.
With Russell Wilson in Pittsburgh and Caleb Williams in Chicago taking his place, his comparatively brief NFL career to date may be characterized as a string of regrettable snubs.
This coming season, Fields will get the new beginning that many feel he deserves as he attempts to establish himself as a possible franchise starter in New York. Putting their previous divisional rivalry aside, the 26-year-old appears content enough to work with a coach he has long admired.
