Dirk Nowitzki Talks About Being “Hurt” With Luka Doncic Trade

One person who was significantly impacted by the Dallas Mavericks’ decision to trade Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers was Dirk Nowitzki, an icon of the Mavericks. When Nowitzki learned that Doncic had been moved, he was as astonished as the rest of the NBA and his phone was exploding.

On the 41 Campus podcast, Nowitzki told his sister Silke Mayer that he was on vacation when Doncic’s story was announced. Mayer was told by Nowitzki: “I don’t think anyone saw it coming that the Mavs would ever trade Luka,”

“So for me, it was totally unexpected, completely out of nowhere. I was so stunned that I just put everything aside. We were supposed to go for a quick lunch with the family before flying out, but instead, I sat in my room for an hour, scrolling through X, trying to figure out if it was real.”

Nowitzki led Dallas to a championship in 2011 and played his whole NBA career with the Mavericks. Doncic was supposed to follow suit, and he had planned to do so until the Mavericks made the unexpected trade decision.

Nowitzki opens up on Luka Doncic’s trade

Even though he still supports the Mavericks, Nowitzki said that their choice to trade Doncic “hurt.” He said: “It was such a strange situation,”

“I was standing in that empty stadium, and then he ran onto the court—in yellow. It was just an unbelievably bizarre moment for me. And of course, it’s going to take weeks and months before it starts to feel a little more normal. It’s a tough situation, but in my tweet, I made it clear—I will always be a Mavs fan. But this trade really hurt. And it will take a while before everyone processes it and moves on.”

Nowitzki has also decided to show his support for Doncic by going to his first Lakers game. He admits that it was odd to watch Doncic play for a different team, but he wanted to let Doncic know that their friendship endures despite the Mavericks’ choice.
