If ‘Rolling Stone’ thought they pissed off Michael Jackson fans when they placed 2001’s ‘Invincible‘ on their list of “most disappointing albums of all time,” nothing could have prepared them for the royal backlash they’re receiving for dissing a fan-favorite from the King of Pop’s magnum opus ‘Thriller.’
As reported here, Jackson’s fan base was up-in-arms after ‘RS’ published an article ranking the ’50 Most Terrible Songs from Great Albums’ – a countdown that placed ‘Thriller’ ballad ‘Lady in My Life’ at #20.
“If Michael Jackson had just capped off ‘Thriller’ with track eight instead of track nine, he would have created one of the most flawless works in music history. But for reasons that are hard to fathom, he tacked ‘The Lady in My Life’ onto the end,” they wrote. “He did deliver a strong vocal, but it’s in service of a song that has no business on the same album as ‘Billie Jean,’ ‘Beat It,’ ‘Human Nature,’ ‘Thriller,’ and ‘Wanna Be Startin’ Something.'”
As steam around the article picked up, MJ fans (affectionately called #MoonWalkers) took to social media in droves to slam the writer, the piece, and – what they argue – is the publication’s consistent dissing of the Pop King’s peerless discography.
Chief among them making headlines was producer extraordinaire Jermaine Dupri.
Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter) on Sunday (February 23), JD lambasted the music mag by sharing a screenshot from the article and weighing in.
“Like this is the reason R&B music no longer gets the love that it’s supposed to, the Grammys, don’t televise the categories and then one of our longest lasting music publications @rollingstone prints some bullsh-t like this, who eva wrote this needs to be thrown out the building, like Eddie Murphy and Beverly Hills cop,” he wrote.
Ouch!
At writing, ‘RS’ has not responded to the public outcry against their polarizing piece.
