After starting as underdogs in the previous two Super Bowls, the Kansas City Chiefs are now the favorites going into Super Bowl LIX next month.
On Sunday, ESPN BET and sportsbooks throughout the country set the Chiefs as a 1.5-point favorite over the Philadelphia Eagles. At ESPN BET, the over/under total started at 49.5.
As underdogs in the previous year’s Super Bowl, Kansas City defeated the San Francisco 49ers in overtime. When the Chiefs came back to defeat the Eagles in their 2023 Super Bowl matchup, they were also the underdogs. A rematch with Philadelphia threatens the Chiefs’ chances of becoming the first club to win three straight Super Bowls.
Chiefs “Three-Peat” a major factor in making bets
At ESPN BET, the Eagles had 11-1 odds to win the Super Bowl at the start of the season. They advanced to their second Super Bowl in the last three seasons after easily defeating the Washington Commanders in the NFC Championship. This season, Philadelphia has won three games while being the underdog.
Caesars Sportsbook’s Joey Feazel stated that he anticipates a split betting public between Philadelphia and Kansas City, “with more leaning towards the Chiefs with the chance at a three-peat.”
Underdogs have been winning 10 of the last 17 Super Bowls, but the favorite has won 36 of the last 58 Super Bowls hands-down. In the Super Bowl, underdogs are 29-27-2 against the spread.
“For at least the first couple of hours, we usually get a big flurry of bets,” stated Johnny Avello, director of the sportsbook at DraftKings. “Sometimes the line moves, sometimes it doesn’t.”
About half an hour after opening on Sunday night, the line gradually increased to a consensus Chiefs -2.
