Hot 100: SZA’s ‘Kill Bill’ Slips One Week Shy of Breaking MAJOR Whitney Houston Record

As far as modern-day R&B goes, the monstrous run of SZA‘s long-awaited sophomore album – 2022’s ‘SOS – is damn near unprecedented. Even more notable are the number of longstanding records she’s broken along the way with the project and its accompanying era.

Beyond opening at #1 on the Billboard 200 with the largest streaming week ever for an R&B effort, the ‘CTRL‘ follow-up would go on to control the chart for a whopping 10 weeks – making it longest-running #1 female studio album by a Black woman since Mariah Carey‘s 1990 debut and Whitney Houston‘s 1987 eponymous project ruled over the tally for a respective 11 weeks.

And while that accomplishment was gargantuan, it wasn’t be the last time SZA (born Solana Rowe) would see her name beside Whitney’s for a historic feat.

Despite enjoying a brief run at #1 on the Hot 100 with the top-selling ‘SOS’ single, ‘Kill Bill,’ the Carter Lang-produced bop has spent most of its tenure on the tally at #2 (blocked from the top by the likes of Taylor Swift, Morgan Wallen, and others along its tenancy).

Last week, ‘Bill’ collected its historic 11th week at #2 – tying Houston’s longtime record of “longest-running #2 single by a female act” achieved when the legendary Pop diva’s 1995 ‘Waiting to Exhale’ soundtrack classic, ‘Exhale (Shoop Shoop),’ fell from #1 and stayed in the runner-up spot for a whopping 11 weeks. It was the first song in history to hold the #2 spot for over 10 weeks.

Before SZA, Olivia Rodrigo‘s 2021 hit ‘Good 4 U’ also clocked 11 weeks at #2. Among all acts, Justin Bieber and Kid Laroi‘s 2021 smash, ‘Stay,’ holds the record for the longest stay in the hit list’s secondary slot (14 weeks).

However, this week’s refreshed Hot 100 shows SZA at #4 – a slip that leaves her in a three-way tie with Rodrigo and the ‘I Will Always Love You’ singer for “longest-running #2 single by a female act.”

If ‘Kill Bill’ manages to rise to #2 at least one more time before the end of its chart run, however, Rowe will be the sole owner of the title.
