The highly anticipated trailer for the upcoming film adaptation of ‘The Color Purple’ has been unwrapped.
Based on the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, which itself was an adaptation of Alice Walker’s 1982 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, the latest incarnation of the story is a musical movie led by Fantasia.
The multi-hyphenate talent is joined by a stellar cast that includes Danielle Brooks, Taraji P. Henson, H.E.R, Halle Bailey, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, Aunjanue Ellis, Jon Batiste, and Ciara.
With a December 25 US theatrical release set, for the Blitz Bazawule production, Warner Bros has unlocked the first look at the eagerly awaited film – which tells the tale of sisters with an unshakeable bond.

‘The Color Purple’ first arrived on the big screen with its 1985 film, which was anchored by Whoopi Goldberg in the role of Celie (which Fantasia now takes on). Oprah Winfrey wowed in the role of Sofia and Steven Spielberg was its director. Later, the story was gifted life anew during its reinvention as a Tony Award-winning Broadway production.
Beyond its US release, ‘The Color Purple’ hits theaters internationally beginning January 18 2024.
