The tale behind Shams Charania’s reporting on the Luka Doncic trade is nearly as bizarre as the actual deal, and he has now spoken out about it.
He described how he learned about the trade in an interview with The Young Man And The Three podcast. Days before the trade deadline, he had learned that the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks were negotiating a trade for a player who would not be included in the larger transaction.
He assumed that what he had heard before was true when he heard that the two sides were once more negotiating a deal the night everything went down. Information then started to slowly surface.
Shams Charania spills the beans on Luka Doncic trade news
He first learned that Markieff Morris and Maxi Kleber were going to Los Angeles, and then that Jalen Hood-Schifino was being dealt to the Utah Jazz due to a three-team transaction. However, they were still unsure of the specifics of the exchange.
“My hands were shaking” — @ShamsCharania goes in detail on how the Luka-AD trade came about with @KOT4Q, Cam Johnson & @talter.

According to Charania: “I’m picking all these pieces apart and I’m like, ‘What’s the trade? Like what is going on here,”
“And by the time I got to the fourth and fifth person I got all the details of the trade. Made one more call and like, I didn’t even say on that call, I basically was like, ‘Is this f—ing real?’ And the person is like, ‘Yeah. Yeah, it’s real.'”
Charania added that he had to make sure every detail of the exchange was accurate before posting it on social media, which is why his hands were literally shaking as he prepared to do so. He didn’t even have time to make a graphic to go with the tweet because everything happened so quickly. Interestingly, he stated: “From the time I heard about it to the time I put it out, probably five to seven minutes went by.”
“After that, my phone was a mess,”. “I had up to like 300 text messages.”
Everyone sent him the same message, according to Charania: “Did you get hacked?”
It was an amazing look at some of the most startling trade rumors in NBA history.
