After Stephen Curry suffered a hamstring injury, Jimmy Butler was unable to carry the Golden State Warriors to victory and maintain their aspirations of winning a title. No one is totally shocked that a diminished club was unable to defeat the Minnesota Timberwolves since it was a difficult challenge.
However, Butler’s performance in Games 4 and 5—taking only 20 shots and recording a -47 in 76 minutes of action—raised some questions and exposed him to criticism. On his most recent podcast, Timeout with Dwyane Wade, former Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade discussed his response to the unexpected event.
DWade on Jimmy Butler in the playoffs:
“You getting $60M, this ain’t workin. He won’t look at the basket. I’ve seen this in a Heat Jersey… I need to see what you’ll do in every moment.“

Wade stated: “I didn’t like…the way he just approached the game,” . “I know Jimmy is a pass-first guy. I know he’s about getting his teammates the ball and wanting to see them shine. But it’s a point where…this ain’t working. You gotta go. He wouldn’t look at the basket, and I’ve seen this before. I’ve seen it in a Heat jersey. And so, in a sense, when Pat [Riley] come out, Pat say, ‘We ain’t wanna give you the extension,’ it’s not always because of injuries. Sometimes it’s, ‘I need to see what you gonna do in every moment, not just in one moment.’
There is undoubtedly disagreement over the benefits of offering Butler a large, long-term deal. However, it appeared that he was widely praised for stepping up and launching a forceful attack when the stakes were highest. Wade can clearly recall a few situations in which that wasn’t the case, but ones that have been masked by the story of Playoff Jimmy.
