Caleb Williams responded on Wednesday to the passage from American Kings: A Biography of the Quarterback, Seth Wickersham’s upcoming book, which revealed that Williams and his father, Carl Williams, contemplated evading the 2024 NFL draft in order to prevent Williams from being selected by the Chicago Bears.

According to the passage, Caleb’s father and son were worried about him joining the Bears, and he expressed interest in playing for Kevin O’Connell after seeing the Minnesota Vikings.

Carl went so far as to consult with attorneys to see if there was a way to circumvent the league’s CBA in order to first avoid being selected by the Bears. He also considered signing with the United Football League and speaking with Archie Manning, who helped keep Eli Manning from joining the San Diego Chargers in 2004.

On Wednesday, the Bears quarterback informed reporters:

“This whole storm that happened, It wasn’t something that we wanted to happen at this point,”. “We’re focused on the present, we’re focused on now, we’re focused on getting this ship moving in the right direction … For this to come out, it’s been a distraction, so coming up here and addressing it is important today.”

“I wanted to come here and be the guy, be a part or the reason of why the Chicago Bears turn this thing around,”

In order to avoid the Bears selecting him in the draft, Caleb mentioned his father’s considerations. He admitted that his visit with O’Connell and the Vikings was positive, but he made it clear that he still wanted to be with Chicago and that after seeing the Bears, he knew he wanted to help the team turn around.
