No Caitlin Clark in the much-talked-about Unrivaled League. Beginning on January 17, 2025, the eagerly awaited 3-on-3 basketball Unrivaled League will play its first season, showcasing some of the top women’s basketball players.
The league, which Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier co-founded, has created a lot of hype because it pays well and allows players to compete locally rather than abroad.
But despite all of the hype surrounding Unrivaled, a number of prominent WNBA players—including some of the most well-known and significant players in the league—have chosen not to participate in the inaugural season.
These are the top five stars who will not be taking part in the premiere of Unrivaled.
The WNBA players who left the Unrivaled League Including Caitlin Clark
Perhaps the league’s most notable absence is Caitlin Clark. Clark was one of Unrivaled’s main objectives since she was regarded as one of the most talented young women’s basketball players. After a hard stretch of nonstop playing, which included her senior year at Iowa and her inaugural season in the WNBA, Clark decided to take a sabbatical and turned down the league’s lucrative offer.
A’ja Wilson, the 2024 WNBA MVP and a vital member of the Las Vegas Aces is another well-known player who has chosen to opt-out. Wilson’s outstanding play the previous season solidified her position as one of the league’s most powerful players.
Another WNBA player who declined to compete in Unrivaled was veteran forward Nneka Ogwumike, a two-time MVP and highly regarded player. The New York Liberty’s star player and former WNBA MVP Jonquel Jones will also miss Unrivaled’s maiden season. Jones is resuming her international career with Sichuan Yuanda in the Women’s Chinese Basketball Association after playing abroad for the most of the offseason.
Last but not least, before the season began, Las Vegas Aces guard Kelsey Plum left Unrivaled. Following a well-publicized divorce, Plum, who had been named to the roster, decided to put her personal life and well-being first.
