Aaron Rodgers Discusses His Difficult 1st Year in Netflix Documentary

Aaron Rodgers has been the best quarterback on the field for most of his NFL career. But when he first started playing, he wasn’t his team’s best signal-caller.

In Aaron Rodgers: Enigma, the first episode of his Netflix documentary series, Rodgers reflected on his humble beginnings. Rodgers talked about how he began playing football at a younger age in the program. Shortly after, he talked about the mentors that helped him get through his first season.

“When I got to high school, I wasn’t very good freshman year. I was tiny. I was like 5-foot-6, 130 lbs. or something… so that wasn’t a great year for me. But there was a few really, really important people that influenced me… quarterback Danny Mehan, he was like a big brother to me in high school.”

Mehan was interviewed by Netflix for the documentary series. He disclosed that Rodgers had very rigorous training and practice routines from the start.

Mehan was interviewed by Netflix for the documentary series. He disclosed that Rodgers had very rigorous training and practice routines from the start. He credited Rodgers’ exceptional performance in the NFL to his drive and work ethic.

“We used to stick around after practice and learn some of the reads, some of the routes together… I would consider myself lazy compared to him. He was doing ladder drills, biometrics and box jumps. He just had that drive inside of him. [There] wasn’t someone fueling him to do it. It was him.”

Sterling Jackson, Rodgers’ previous coach, echoed Mehan’s remarks.

“You could see that he was very focused, very talented in his footwork… and passionate about football. So he took into himself to increase his strength, increase his fitness, increase his mentality.”

When his turn came, Rodgers put up great stats, but he was not offered a Division One scholarship. People “did not want to pull the trigger on an unknown, small town, Northern California kid,” according to Jackson. As a result, Rodgers transferred to the California Golden Bears after first attending a junior college.

Rodgers was able to establish himself on a larger stage after arriving. Ultimately, he was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the 2005 NFL Draft.
