37 Years & 16 Nominations Later: Diane Warren’s Best Song OSCAR Losing Streak Continues

Having penned some of the most memorable hits of Beyonce, Cher,  Monica, Aaliyah, Celine Dion, Toni Braxton, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Aerosmith, Mary J. Blige, Brandy, and many others, Diane Warren has a hit-filled resume that’s arguably unrivaled.

But when it comes to the Best Original Song category at the annual Academy Awards, the 68-year-old has something else that’s unrivaled: her losing streak.

Nominated for the H.E.R.-performed ‘The Journey’ from Tyler Perry‘s Netflix film The Six Triple Eight at the 97th annual Academy Awards on Sunday night (March 2), Diane – alongside Abraham Alexander and Adrian Quesada as well as Elton John and Brandi Carlile – watched Clement and Camille Ducol accept the honor for contributing ‘El Mal’ to the ‘Emilia Perez’ soundtrack.

Marking the 16th OSCAR loss of Warren’s career, the defeat comes 37 years after her first nod: ‘Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now’ from the ‘Mannequin‘ film at the 1988 ceremony.

At least the legendary songwriter can boast ownership of an honorary Academy Award, which she was awarded at the 13th Governors Awards in 2022.

As far as competitive OSCARs go, however, she maintains the record for most nominations and no wins: 0-16.
