‘The Color Purple’ Hits $25 Million in Just Two Days at the US Box Office

‘The Color Purple’ is earning both rave reviews and big bucks at the box office.

Led by Fantasia Barrino in the role of Celie, Blitz Bazawule‘s reimagining of Alice Walker‘s beloved tale takes on the form of a musical.

And it’s hitting all the right notes out of the gate.

As reported, ‘The Color Purple’ blasted past expectations to deliver an $18.1 million first-day gross at the US box office.

Unwrapped on Christmas Day (December 25) for Stateside audiences, it’s clear the melodic movie – which also stars the likes of Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Halle Bailey, and Ciara – formed a major part of the day for many. So much so that it bested the likes of ‘Aquaman 2’ and ‘Wonka.’

Now, after registering another $7.1 million on its second day, the film’s two-day gross lifts to an impressive $25 million domestically.

Echoing yesterday’s report, ‘The Color Purple’ produced the largest Christmas Day opening for a movie since 2009 and the second-biggest Christmas Day opening of all time.

Some analysts point to ‘Purple’s $100 million budget as a point to consider. Put simply, it’ll need to perform consistently well through the New Year and turn a solid profit to be hailed as a seismic success when assessed from a purely commercial lens.

Still, having already racked up major nods at the Golden Globes, growing Oscar buzz, and a release in international markets pending (including a January 26 launch in the UK), it looks like the film’s touchdowns are just beginning.
