Hold on to your hats because we have some drama brewing in the music world! So, get this – singer Nezza recently sang the U.S. National Anthem in Spanish at a Los Angeles Dodgers game, and now she’s saying she’s been getting death threats because of it.
I mean, come on now, folks. The singer was just showing off her talent and performing in a different language – what’s the harm in that? It’s 2025, people! Let’s embrace diversity and different cultures instead of spreading hate.
In an exclusive interview on Wednesday, Nezza opened up about the backlash that followed her rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Dodger Stadium on Saturday. The controversy stems from her decision to sing the anthem entirely in Spanish, a choice she claims Dodgers officials tried to block just moments before she took the field.
Nezza shared a behind-the-scenes TikTok video shortly after the game, which captured audio of a Dodgers representative telling her she was not permitted to perform the anthem in Spanish. Despite the directive, she went through with it anyway—explaining that she wanted to honor her cultural roots and the millions of Spanish-speaking Americans who call Los Angeles home.
“Honestly, I feel proud,” Nezza said. “I feel like I was on the right side of history. I wasn’t trying to make a political statement—I was trying to sing from the heart. I love this country. I was born and raised here. My dreams came true here. But loving your country doesn’t mean you can’t challenge it to do better.”
While the performance went viral for its beauty and boldness, it also unleashed a torrent of hate, including racial slurs and threats on her life. But Nezza isn’t letting it shake her.
“Yeah, the death threats are scary,” she admitted. “But this is the internet age. People are going to get upset no matter what you do, especially when it comes to culture and identity. I knew it might stir something up—but I didn’t expect this level of anger.”
Still, she’s finding solace in the support she’s received from fans and fellow artists. “George Lopez reached out, so did Becky G, and a bunch of others I’ve looked up to for years,” she said. “They reminded me I’m not alone in this. And that means everything.”
Some critics online accused Nezza of staging the viral moment to gain attention, but she quickly shut down those rumors. She explained that the only reason they caught the Dodgers official on video was because her boyfriend happened to be recording her sound check for personal memories.
“He was just filming behind the scenes—he didn’t even realize he was picking up audio from the official telling me to sing it in English,” Nezza said. “They had me redo the sound check in English, while he was standing there. That moment wasn’t planned. It just happened.”
Nezza emphasized she never set out to defy the team and believed there was a green light for the Spanish version. “Nobody told me beforehand that I couldn’t sing it in Spanish,” she said. “So when they tried to change it last-minute, I felt like I had to make a choice—and I chose to be authentic.”
The Dodgers, for their part, released a statement following the performance and the backlash, saying: “There were no consequences or hard feelings from the Dodgers regarding her performance. She was not asked to leave. We would be happy to have her back.”
But Nezza says that message doesn’t match what she was told in private. “If there are no hard feelings, then why did I get that phone call before going on stage? I’d love to hear why there’s a disconnect between what’s being said publicly and what I experienced,” she said.
Let’s show Nezza some love and support for doing what she loves and representing her heritage. Music is all about bringing people together, so let’s keep it positive, folks!
