Pedro Martinez, a baseball analyst and Hall of Fame pitcher, posted on social media that numerous members of his family were inside the Dominican Republic nightclub that collapsed.
In a video that was uploaded to Instagram, Martinez stated: “I still have family members that are still in the (rubble) and we don’t know what happened to them,”
The tragedy at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo on Tuesday has resulted in up to 124 fatalities and at least 150 injuries. Martinez, an eight-time All-Star and three-time Cy Young Award winner, was raised in a Santo Domingo suburb.
In the video, he stated: “It is with a heavy heart that it is my turn to actually send condolences to all our family members and the people here in the United States who have family over there,”
“We’re all sad, we’re all affected by the tragedy. Our hearts are with you. We all are affected.”
Both former MLB player Tony Blanco and former World Series winner Octavio Dotel passed away as a result of injuries sustained during a mass-casualty incident.
Nelson Cruz’s sister was also among the dead. The country’s Montecristi province was governed by Nelsy Milagros Cruz Martinez.
Authorities claimed Tuesday evening that Dotel was pronounced dead upon arrival at a local hospital after being taken to the medical center for treatment of severe injuries, despite reports that he was still alive when rescuers found him and at least seven other people.
