At the NFL scouting combine on Tuesday, Falcons coach Raheem Morris and general manager Terry Fontenot stated that the organization was not aware that quarterback Kirk Cousins was battling an injury late in the 2024 campaign.
During Super Bowl week, Cousins stated on NFL Network that he was struck during the Week 10 game against the New Orleans Saints, causing injuries to his right elbow and shoulder. According to Cousins, the arm never returned to its desired position for the remainder of the season.
One day in Week 11, the Falcons listed Cousins as injured, stating that he was limited in practice (a walk-through, precisely) because of a right elbow and right shoulder problem.
Raheem Morris and Terry Fontenot talk about Kirk Cousins
Fontenot and Morris stated that the organization was unaware of Cousins’ ailment other than that one injury report. After Week 10, the quarterback struggled, completing the next five games with just one touchdown pass and nine interceptions.
At the NFL combine on Tuesday, Fontenot stated: “He was on the injury report that one week,” “When a player is injured, we put him on the injury report and that’s the only time he was on the injury report. So as far as we’re concerned, that’s the only injury we’re aware of.”
In Week 16, rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. replaced Cousins on the bench. Morris insisted on Tuesday that it was solely a football decision, as the team had stated at the time. Cousins should remark on injury claims, according to Morris, who also stated that “for us, it was all about performance.”
The coach stated: “The reason we made the change when we made it was because we had some bad decisions going along that way,”
“It was well-documented. The interceptions that we threw was well-documented, the amount of touchdowns that we had at that point. And it was well-documented, the trust and the confidence I had for us to be able to bounce back, so we didn’t do those things.”
Given Cousins’ comments about his injuries, Fontenot promised to keep any discussions he had with him and his agent, Mike McCartney, confidential.
