On Wednesday, Jeff Ulbrich, the defensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons, issued a public apology for the disclosure of Shedeur Sanders‘ personal phone number and his son’s use of it to make a spoof call to Sanders during the NFL draft.
Speaking during a press conference at the Falcons‘ stadium, Ulbrich stated: “My actions of not protecting confidential data were inexcusable,”
“My son’s actions were absolutely inexcusable, and for that we are both deeply sorry.”
In response to the incident, the NFL fined Ulbrich $100,000 and the Falcons $250,000 earlier in the day.
Ulbrich’s 21-year-old son apologized on Instagram on Sunday after acknowledging the hoax call. In a statement released on Sunday, the Falcons said that Jax Ulbrich entered the number from his father’s open iPad while he was at his parents’ house “to later conduct a prank call.”
According to the NFL, the penalties were imposed for “failing to prevent the disclosure of confidential information distributed to the club in advance of the NFL Draft.” Ulbrich stated that the Falcons and he will not be contesting the fine.
Ulbrich claimed that he was “not happy and shocked” to learn of what had transpired and that he was unaware of it until after the draft.
