A tweak to kickoffs that would encourage players to field the ball more frequently rather than touchbacks was one of the new NFL regulations for 2024 that the committee approved. However, it appears that the league may finally take action to address one persistent problem as the referee errors and controversies keep piling up.

NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations Troy Vincent told The Athletic’s Dianna Russini that the competition committee intends to talk about expanding replay assistance so that they may examine particular infractions like facemasks.

Replay assistance was extended for 2024 to assist referees with situations like intentional grounding and roughing the passer. However, the league has been urged to make such penalties reviewable because the referees have missed a startling number of facemask calls this season.

Over the years, Roger Goodell and his team have made significant efforts to strengthen the NFL’s enforcement of its regulations, despite some strategies’ failure. For example, the league eliminated the ability for coaches to protest pass interference penalties and booth reviews in 2019 after just one year due to its dismal results.

Even while the officials aren’t flawless, there hasn’t been enough consistency in adhering to the NFL’s rules regarding holding, pass interference, and roughing the quarterback. Of course, reducing the scrutiny of the referees would be greatly aided by increasing replay help.
